Hi this is my first post here so please bear with me!

Basically I just checked my online bank and discovered I had been charged a £25 fee for what looked like being overdrawn on the 4th may, however I could not see any time I was overdrawn in my account but had money coming in and going out on 4th May.

I rung alliance and leicester and the lady on the phone informed me that there was 2 d/d's going out of my account on the 4th and money came in (more than enough to cover the d/d's) on that same day.

The lady told me to money went out in the morning leaving me overdrawn for a few hours but then my credit came in thats why I couldn't see how I was overdrawn.

My arrangement is for the money to come into my account on the 1st of each month and money to leave on the 3rd of each month leaving enough time for everything to clear. This was on the advice of alliance and leicester and I never use my overdraft.

I am absolutly livid that alliance and leicester won't refund me the £25 it was seriously out of my control. I have made an official complaint but I just wondered if anyone had any advice for me.

Money has to arrive in the day before DDs are due for most banks.

    Maybe alter your SOs.

I did this previously on their advice, my money should go in on the 1st and out on the 3rd! My thinking is the bank holiday has messed up my payments

Debits are processed before credits. My bank does the same.

So it sounds like I have no chance of getting my money back!

Its very naughty what they have done though, I must have been overdrawn for a few hours!
  • Perhaps try calling them once more and see if you they can waive the charges if it is your first "offence". A nice customer service representative may be more willing to help you if you explain it was an honest mistake. It's up to them though because if this in their T&C's there is only hoping they make an exception for you, but you can't really insist. You always have the option to change bank accounts if you're not happy with their treatment of you.

Yes, your official complaint will be dismissed as there are no grounds for one. For the reasons given above A&L are under no obligation to refund the charge, but you may be lucky if it's a first time problem.

One way to avoid this in the future is to have a small overdraft in place, an amount likely to cover such eventualities. In this instance it would have prevented charges and not put a blot on your internal record with them.

alliance & leicester have done this to me before, my wages or any payments into the account do not clear until 4.00am on the dot, unlike other banks ive been with where it is midnight.... however debits are taken at midnight so makes me wonder a little, why so..... obvious in my opinion. vast majority of other banks clear funds at the turn of the clock, A&L do it at 4.00am, worst bank in the world IMO without doubt.
