Brown patches & spots on bedroom ceiling

Over the last few months, I have noticed a sizeable amount of brown patches on my bedroom ceiling (close to the join with the wall at the front of the house). To my knowledge, no water has actually come through and I couldn't see any evidence of any leaks in the attic (directly above).
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I am hopeless in this sort of area and wouldn't even be sure what kind of tradesman would be needed. If the problem is in the attic, would a roofer definitely deal with it or is someone else required as well?

Looks like damp, are you ventilating your property?0

have had this in my bedroom, we had to replace all the fascia and soffits and guttering & do a minor repair on the roof to solve the problems but what we really need is a complete new roof
so it is likely damp or a small water leak seeping slowly through... BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -

Brown marks are typical of a leak, either froma pipe in the loft or leaking roof. As it is not gushing it is probably something quite simple. Get a roofer/builder in to look at it.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
