The BT Payphones section is entirely self sufficient, and not subsidised by the rest of BT.

Dont believe you are correct, if 'self sufficient' 60p is the presumably the 'cost' price of providing the service so how can anyone complain at something being provided at cost price ?...if 60p is a huge mark up on cost price then other Telco's would but moving in and undercutting BT's price, but they dont, think about it, there are more GSM sim cards/phones in this country than adults, even payphones in busy areas like airports and train stations dont get that much use and as they tend to managed sites part of any 'profit' is taken by the site owner, that leaves payphones on street corners etc..they get hardly any use at all, all payphone have to be maintained, cleaned and repaired when vandalised or faulty, this costs far more that any income they generate.. payphones dont contribute to BT profits, they lose money and BT as the incumbent Telco has no choice but to provide this loss making service,
