Building an extension

Hope this is the right place to post!
I am in the early stages (i.e. getting permission!) of building an extension. I currently have a single level kitchen extension, and a 3 floor house - I will be building a bedroom above the kitchen, and converting a small bedroom to a bathroom.
From a money-saving point of view, will standard insulation be sufficient or should I be asking for extra to be fitted? It will be built with standard cavity walls, and I think with silver insulating sheets inbetween. (Next door is doing exactly the same a few months ahead of me, and thats what he has!).
Is there anything else I should think of?
Not that I want to go TOO radical though, please don't suggest I build it myself out of straw or anything! I doubt I could get it through planning! :rotfl:

Building control will insist on minimum insulation standards in accordance with planning legislation, for your new conversion/extension - this will almost certainly mean "topping up" existing levels (where affected by the extension), and meeting the requirements stipulated (this includes the need to insulate walls, roof voids etc.) .... if you fancy some bedtime reading the full documents can be found at ....

Normally plans prepared by your planner should illustrate to the builder whats required and where (both in walls and in roof voids), this would have been required to get building control approval for the works.0
