Is it really fair to have made redundancies Dec 09 & now May 10, Sept 10 & another!?

Is it really fair to have made redundancies Dec 09 & now May 10, Sept 10 & another!?

friend work place has made redundancies Dec09, which survived.

Waiting to hear mid Month for May10 cuts

then will have to wait again for Sept10
and i think a third one for 2010 in Dec10!?

Crazy. All work being outsourced, so them working out if they have a job or not, redundancy or not etc.

Big cuts being made to this section of a large company

The current economic climate is very unpredictable. It may not be nice for the employees (or the employer), but there is nothing 'unfair' about it.
    Gone ... or have I?

No not really fair, but as dmg says, current climate very unpredictable. In my department we had redundancies twice last year (6 month gap) and when they announced the second round, everyone just burst into tears! Not very pleasant at all but there really is nothing you can do

Don't be the last out, money has gone by then.

Note the criteria of earler rounds,

Either fill then or not for the next round

Out sourcing then look at TUPE rules

I know that if I was choosing people to keep employing I would chose those who could write/type actual sentences!

Edited to add: I think it is completely fair to impose redundancies over a period of time rather than all in one go. It gives all those employees not caught up in the first round of redundancies a chance to look for new employment.

Unfair as opposed to what? Making every single person possible redundant the first time around? That seems rather less "fair" to me. It sounds to me like they could be an employer who is trying their best to minimise job losses so are making cuts only when absolutely forced to. Which seems "fair" to the employees to me.

To be honest, "fair" and "unfair" are really poor choices of words to apply to this kind of thing.
