Saline Nasal Baths

Does anyone do that thing where you wash your nasal cavities with salt? I want to start but don't know how/what to get!

Thanks

Is this the right board? Most answers here are "get an electrician/gas fitter in" or 'use Polyfilla/No Nails". I presume you are OK for mastics?

:D I think you'd probably get a more sensible (though less amusing) response if you posted this on the Health & Beauty sub-forum of the Marriage, Relationships & Family board.

But yes, I do have a neti pot. (Coming from the north-east, that name causes much hilarity whenever I mention it to my family as it sounds like something you definitely wouldn't want to be putting up your nose in Geordieland! )

You can buy the simple plastic ones cheaply. The one I've got is the purple one at the top of this page: http://www.yogamad.com/Neti+Pots/?osCsid=rsh90i7pgn0pd6thtfo71mmbm4

I bought it because I have sinus problems and colds always affect those badly. It really helped when I went on holiday last year with an horrendous cold and meant I recovered more quickly than usual.

I buy boxes of salt sachets (they're specially formulated, not just the plain and simple salt cellar stuff. You put body temperature warm water (boil it and leave it to cool down first) into the pot, then dissolve a salt sachet in there. Here's a youtube vid so you can see the technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX8HyjZsq_o&feature=related

It looks pretty daft, but it does seem to help!

    Hello fund_manager

I'll move your thread to the 'Health, Beauty & Fashion' board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

I was advised to do it following sinus surgery by my consultant.

He recommended a home-made mix (I think of salt, bicarb and I think sugar...the recipe is online somewhere on an NHS hospital site)...in warm boiled water, through a basic small plastic syringe.

Once I'd done it a few times, it was fine to do and felt very cleansing and helpful. I wish I'd done it earlier, while I was struggling with the sinusitis, I'm sure it would have helped make things a bit more comfortable.

It's supposed to be helpful for some allergy sufferers too.

I've done this before too when I've had a bad cold and sinus issues. I just made a warm salt water solution and snorted it off a teaspoon. It's messy and tastes well salty but not painful or stingy as you might expect.

I have had to do this to help clean my sinuses following a bilateral Vidian neurectomy ( surgery for chronic rhinitis) - sounds really gross and definately something that has to be done in total privacy - but it really works amazingly well :)

Chronic Rhynitis here also. I was recommended to do this forever after my last sinus surgery and removal of polyps. This is what was recommended:

I would be interested in the recipe on an nhs site to save money on the sachets!
