HELP PLEASE With Benefits for Termimally ill Husband ??

All help needed please for my OH mum with what to claim and how for benefits for her husband who is terminally ill .

Unfortunately my Boyfriend's dad has recently been diagnosed with Brain Tumours and has been given 3- 6 months to live .

My OH mum is obviously under alot of stress at the moment with hospital visits and the news etc. But she also is not knowledgeable on normal finances . I have been told that she is to make an appointment with Age concern , but she is particularly concerned about money when her husband passes away . And my boyfriends dad is worried about his wife so things need to be sorted quickly .

Any other help off here would be very helpful please as this is a topic none of us know anything about ?

My Oh dad is still in hospital and is there any benefits he can claim now and what can my OH mum claim for example careers { but he is still in hospital } and who to make the claims to please ?

They currently have a mortgage, both are retired in their 60 's and my OH dad does have a very small pension of £2000.00 . They have no savings at all , one child which is my OH who works full time , but cannot support his mum financially.

If he's over 65, he can claim attendance allowance under the special rules. He doesn't have to wait 6 months before filling the form in. He doesn't have to fill in the form, giving details of the help needs. He needs a form from his GP - stating that he has 6 months (or less) to live.

    Very sad situation.

Best to talk to a benefit advisor, when my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer my mum was in a similar situation, she nursed him at home.

We didn't apply for anything cause we didn't know anything about the benefit system (something that has since changed as I was diagnosed with a different form of Cancer in 2008).

After he passed away we found out that he should have been receiving a number of benefits (as he was being cared for at home).

Also some benefits are age related.

Things should be "fast tracked" due to the nature of his illness.
That is why it is important to get it done right away and done correctly.

    Good luck

As stated, you can be awarded DLA or AA under Special Rules upon completion of a form available from your hospital.

I am not sure if a brain tumour counts as a type of cancer but perhaps if it does, the Macmillan nurses might be able to advise.

There is also carers Allowance when he returns home and his wife is caring for him.

A very sad situation to be in with such a poor prognosis and I wish you all the very best for the next few months and beyond which will be difficult for you all.

Thankyou for your replies . I will have a look at the links that you have all posted later tonight / in the morning with OH.

G51shopaholic Thanks I had a look on the link but I was screened out due to him being in hospital .

The tumours are cancer and he is still in hospital and still waiting radiotherapy, however he is not well enough at the moment for treatment . So im not sure how this will effect the benefits as it doesnt look like he will be going home anytime soon, if at all :(.

So as I thought that applications need to be done now really , and I am trying to get the information together now so my boyfriend can explain to his mum this week preferably in the hope that she wont have the worry of it all when the inevitable happens .

To claim Attendance Allowance (for over 65's) or DLA (under 65) under the special rules the form he'll need is called a DS1500 which can be given by the hospital or GP. Either of t hese will stop once he has been in hospital for 4 weeks but paid again when the claimant is discharged.

Mum can claim Pension Credit for the two of them and if he is awarded Attendance Allowance or DLA then she should also claim Carers Allowance as long as she's caring over 35 hours pw

They should get full Council Tax Benefit which is claimed at same time as Pension Credit.

You mention mum is worried about what she'll live on when he dies. She'll be able to continue to claim Pension Credit but it will be reduced to the rate of a single person - again she'll have full entitlement to council tax benefit.

There are often CABx or similar in hospitals and they should tell you everything.
