Tax credits - confusion rules!

I rang tax credits last week to report that my DH had started work and what did I need to do.
The lady said I will be getting a renewal pack and to put all the info on then either call up to renew or post it in.
She gave me an estimate for 2010/11 based on last years 09/10 income. All fine and dandy I think.
I've checked my bank this am and have a payment of £4.04 so I called them up and ask what is this for. The chap said that is it an adjustment based on the new info I gave them last week. I said well I thought what we get this years is based on last years earnings so next years will be based on this years - iygwim. He gave me a figure which was quite a bit less that I was quoted last week.
My question is will this years 2010/11 payment be based on last years 2009/10 earnings or have I misunderstood?
TIA
Susie
