Sorry, didn't know where to post this.:(

I had an account with BT which I terminated and paid up in June 2009 due to moving house. At the time, I believed (and still do) that the account had been paid up in full.

9 months later in March 2010, a debt collection agency contacted me. Apparently BT had been writing to me regarding a £21 outstanding bill (at my old address - despite my having subsequently opened a new account with them at a new address), but having recieved no reply, they had referred this to a debt collection agency.

I disputed this "debt" with the debt collection agency, they said they would refer back to BT. After a couple of weeks I called them back as I'd heard nothing, they said they were still awaiting a response from BT.

Now, some 6 weeks later, I have called the debt collection agency again as I've heard nothing, only to be advised that the case has been "requested back" by BT. Apparently I should have had a letter confirming this (I imagine it's been sent to my old address, despite my having provided a new one).

I've contacted BT, they were about to refer the matter to another debt collection agency (they hadn't even responded to my dispute!). They have now agreed that I don't owe the £20 and never did.

Anyway, what I want to know is; is it reasonable of me to request written confirmation from BT that nothing has been added to my credit file as a result of this "debt"? I've never defaulted on a payment in my entire life, so I don't want a note on my file regarding a £20 bill that I didn't even owe!

Yes it is entirely reasonable to ask this, then they will have a record on your account should they screw up again, also you will have the letter and ref number etc. .

The guy at BT claimed that nothing will have been added to my credit file anyway? But I would have thought that surely if this warranted being referred to a debt collection agency, it would be added to my file as a non-payment? I don't know, I'm not clued up on these things as I always pay my bills!:(

Maybe get a copy of your credit file? Only costs a few quid but will give you peace of mind. Plus if there is anything on it about the debt, you have something in writing to take to BT for you to dispute.

There are a few places you can get copies of your file, am sure there is something somewhere on MSE about it
Just started comping - 1/12/08 - keep your fingers crossed!

Obtain a copy of your credit file. Get BT to pay for it.
