Boodle please could you tell me the recipe for "bacon" turnip plate pie? I'm assuming the "bacon" is veggie bacon, and I have lots of this in the freezer at the moment.

    Thanks in advance,

Yay :j Love this thread :D and it has really made me think about my meals and how I can be more economical.

My children get free school meals so cooking in the evening is a total waste of money when I can just get away with doing sandwiches etc.. and for lunch time I can have a single portion of something that I've cooked and frozen individually. With that in mind I suddenly seem to have a lot more food :T:cool::money: In fact I got a bit carried away ...

Breakfasts - cereal, eggs, toast, pancakes

    Lunch time (just moi)
Tues - veg lasagne and salad
    Wed - chicken salad
Thurs - veg chilli & rice
    Fri - pasta bolognaise

    Sun - roast chicken dinner
Mon - veg lasagne & salad
Tues - veg chilli & rice
    Wed - J/P vegetables
    Thurs - chicken curry
    Fri - chicken pasta
Sat - shepherd pie, peas, gravy

    Tea/other meal:
Tues - cheese sandwiches, rice pud
Wed - eggy bread, fruit salad
    Thurs - pancakes, fruit salad
Fri - beans on toast, icecream
    Sat - sandwiches, jelly
Sun - cheese on toast, hm biscuits
Mon - boiled egg, soldiers, jam poly poly

Hi PP, thanks for starting the thread.

This is subject to change but will help me to start thinking about what we're doing next week! Trying to use up some freezer contents so that I can take advantage of the free 2.25kg bag of Homefries voucher that I got emailed!

Monday: [STRIKE]Some kind of stir fry[/STRIKE] Sausage and mash with Jamie's Onion Gravy (YUM) and veg as I forgot we'd taken sausages out of the freezer to make room for the Homefries.
Tuesday: [STRIKE]Some kind of risotto and salad[/STRIKE] Out at the cinema (free preview) so just a Splendips for me
Wednesday: [STRIKE]2 for 1 at Revolution as we have a gig to go to (guest list!)[/STRIKE] No gig as the last 2 trains back to ours have been replaced with a bus this week that takes over twice as long! So we'll be going home and having the stir fry we were supposed to have on Monday.
Thursday:[STRIKE] 2 for 1 somewhere else as we're going to the Theatre (half price)[/STRIKE] Again, no theatre cause of the train so we'll be having the risotto from Tuesday!
Friday: Cheese and tomato flatbread from the freezer with salad and chips
Saturday: A free concert in the evening so something quick and easy - pasta maybe?
Sunday: OH has a half marathon in Chester so not sure what our plans are.

    Ch-ch-ch-changes!

    Hi Sexymouse :)

Yes it is veggie bacon. I made about 200g shortcrust with salt and white pepper, then rolled out half for the bottom of the pie. Layer of rashers went on top. I spread those with mashed steamed swede (also some salt and white pepper in.) I was planning to use steamed slices of white turnip but DH brought a packet of cubed swede home instead ;) 2 onions sliced into rings on top of that. Pastry lid on top. Baked at 180C for 40 minutes. It was very yummy with the swede actually. Was a hit with everyone else too :) DH and I both think that perhaps it would also be nice with just a double thickness of bacon and plenty of onion. I'm thinking maybe sliced tomatoes and/or black olives in there too.

    Hope that helps x

As for changing plans around - I was very naughty last night: we had the broccoli, chilli and garlic tagliatelle and I used the baguette (supposed to be for pizza) to make a cheesy garlic bread to go with it :O Will never get those last few lbs shifted at this rate :p Need to come up with something for the missing evening now and stay strong when near takeaway menus... ;)
Edit: Will be making a sort of ocean-inspired pie - tofu, peas and sweetcorn in Cheez sauce, topped with mash, with an avocado salad on the side. Fancy it right now, actually....
Love and compassion to all x

Thanks Boodle - will definitely give that a go. Just out of interest, which veggie bacon do you use, as I've found the Mr T veggie bacon seems to crumble into pieces when I try to seperate the rashers - I used to like morningstar until they stopped making it?
