Basic bank accounts with no credit check - who does this ?

OK, I know that if you apply for a Nationwide basic Flex account by post, not in the bank but by post, then they do not credit check you. I had that confirmed in their branch and again on the telephone.
I hear that Barclays also do not check you. Is this true ?
I hear people being refused Nat West, Co-op etc. and they can only be declined if they check you out. Nationwide's logic is that if you apply by post then you need to reply to whatever they send you so they can prove your address that way.
Any ideas ?

I think you'll find providers of all types of Bank accounts will check applicants Credit Files, no matter how they apply.
There are several reasons Banks/Lenders check applicants Credit Files:
1. To establish your Identity - you are who you say you are.
2. To see if there's a Notice of Correction (added by you) on your file.
3. To establish your credit worthiness.
You can get your credit report FREE every year for a set up fee of £2.50 by Clicking here and following the Annual Credit Report link.
Hope this helps.0 -
Go for the Barclays Cash Card Account. It's better than the Nationwide basic flex.
Barclays could open the account on the same day, with account details. You only need one piece of UK photo ID.
They won't credit score you, but will check your identity.0 -
If Barclays do not score you and only check your identity how can they see if you have a CIFAS flag?0
