Ebay cheque payment query

I advertise a musical instrument on ebay which sold for £150, the buyer has a good rating of about 140. I specified Paypal as the payment method but the buyer has contacted me saying their paypal doesn't work, will I accept a cheque, I replied saying I would but would only post item once the cheque had fully cleared...how can I make sure I don't get ripped off?

The advice given in the Daily Mail financial section about cheques was to phone your bank on their recorded line after cheques shows as cleared for funds in your account. Ask them to confirm the cheque has cleared, and then should there be problems later you can say you acted on their advice.
Otherwise, suggest to the buyer that he uses a bank transfer as it is quicker for him (always give it a positive spin) as AFAIK bank transfers can't be reversed like a cheque.
