Need a gas supply

I have just purchased a ground floor flat which currently has no gas. The house was converted into two flats a few years back and although there is a gas supply and meter in the communal hallway, this only supplies the top flat. To supply my flat, British Gas say that they would need to pipe from the street and will be sending me a quote for the work, which could be anything from £500 to a few grand (according to the person i spoke to). I have spoken to a gas engineer that I know and he said that they could quite easily 't bone' off the existing meter.

Can anyone offer advice on this as it seems pointless to pipe from the street when there is a gas supply coming into the property for the flat above.

......on top of this, I could really do without shelling out hefty sums for this work.

Cheers

they would have to do a split in the supply before the meter and dependent upon a lot of things not least current law on such things you may well need a new supply - forget bg go direct to the gas transporter for your area ( if you say where you are in the country I can tell who that is) these are the people who own the pipes in the street and up to the meter and they are the people who will have to do the work and bg will only be contacting them to do it adding a fee on top for doing that for you.

  • The property is located in L17, Liverpool. I have today contacted National Grid who have said that a new connection from the street will be £282 as long as I dig the trench myself or £673 if they are to dig the trench.

.....on that basis, I think ill be doing some digging in the very near future!! :p

I'd be very careful of where they are expecting to take your new supply from. It may be that the new service to your flat needs to be taken directly from the main. The gas main could be located on the footpath outside your property, the middle of the road or even the opposite footpath. I would get more details on this trench thats required as it may involve traffic control, a road crossing or even closure of the highway in which case it really will cost a fortune and a lot of time dealing with the local authority roads department. The £673 may seem like a lot of money but it could be worth it to let National Grid do all the leg work.
