I'm looking for a Laptop, i want to play games on it and have a budget of a little over £500.
I've come across two websites that seem to offer very good discounts on laptops and these are Dell Outlet and Argos Clearance on Ebay.
I would like to know peoples experience of these sites, particularly Dell Outlet. Today I tried buying what seemed a fantastic laptop for the price ( i7 and a very powerful graphics card for £577(a tad over budget but I was impressed by the spec :P)), but after entering the card details it timed me out and said my order had been removed from the basket. I straight away went back to the shopping pages and checked back regularly for 20 mins... but it never appeared.
The laptop in question had Grade 2 dent or scratch... my first question is does anyone know dells criteria for grading the cosmetic blemishes?
Is another offer this good likely to come up again in the near future on the site?
With respects to Argos clearance... How often is the stock updated? All the laptops in my price bracket seem to have blu-ray which is a feature i don't need and don't want to pay for, and they don't have Intel's new processors (i'm hoping for at least i5).

Dell Outlet on Ebay... I did a search and it says the shop no longer exists, have they just moved all operations to the Dell Outlet site?0

i got the boys xps lappy, superb for gaming, from the dell outlet, there where no blemishs etc.
and full one year onsite warranty with it.0 -
If you leave things in your basket for more than a certain time, they are automatically removed, so that they can reappear on the site to other potential buyers. Otherwise people could go in and 'reserve' dozens of items while they make their minds up.
I'm guessing your laptop was removed, and then snapped up by someone else.
No problem at all buying from the Outlet site-as the items will have been individually tested and repaired, the'yre probably more reliable than the 'standard' retail ones. The warranty is accordingly the same. The worst case is that you might get very minor cosmetic blemishes. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Plenty of experience re Dell Outlet and Atgos Clearance at the link below which is another thread within the Techie Stuff forum.

They SAY they don't charge until the item has been shipped and being a big company like Dell I should be in the safe... but that was on my dads card ( I only have maestro/solo) and he is very vigilant with these things.
Anywho! I found another laptop i liked the sound of, dell studio1749. Same graphics card as before but...
The processor shows up as 'click system ID - 0'. I couldn't find any answers in a Google other than email Dell and ask. After my last experience (and still not having my last email to Dell replied to) I knew time was of the essance i did a search for 1749... It should have an i5. Is there a chance this won't be the case?
I bought it on my maestro anyway, which dell said would be charged when the order had been processed rather than when the item is dispatched so i hope there are no hiccups after that happens.
I'm glad to hear by and large good experiences, its very reassuring.0 -

Glad you started this thread - I've also been looking at the dell outlet site and wanted to know how these products differ from new.
Anyway, you can tell what chip it is by clicking on the details/specification button - it's usually at the top but is sometimes hidden away at the bottom of the page.
I was also interested in one that said "click system ID - 0" or similar, and the chip was T4400. Check chip speeds here http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
I'm interested in the pricing - the same machine with the same specs seem to vary quite dramatically, for no apparent reason. Those with decent chips are sometimes cheaper than those with poorer chips, again with the same other specifications.0 -
I did look at the details/ specifications page but it didn't mention the processor in this case... even on the other 1749's that were up and said in the CPU column it was an i5, when clicking on the product details no chip was shown. I'm just going on the assumption all 1749's will be the same... I can all ways send it back if its a duffer. Order still processing though
I'm now almost certain that grade 1 means less damaged than grade 2 scratch and dent (as they all seem cheaper).
Hopefully in 10 days time I'll be able to report back happy.0 -
These are the classifications from the Outlet site:
Certified Refurbished PCs are laptops and desktops that have been returned to Dell, put through the production process, and then again retested to ensure they meet all original factory specifications. Certified Refurbished systems may have some observable cosmetic blemishes, but they will not affect performance.
Previously Ordered New systems are PCs that were canceled orders, or PCs that shipped out to a customer who either did not open the box or decided to return the system without ever using it. Previously Ordered New systems do not have any cosmetic damages.
Scratch and Dent products are systems with considerable cosmetic blemishes that do not affect performance. They are a great way to save money while still enjoying Dell Outlet's rigorous rebuilding and testing process. Scratch and Dent computers will not have scratches or pits on the screen, missing or illegible letters on the keyboard, or damage to the touchpad or palmrest.
