Fitness First Woes!! Please help me

I signed up to fitness first in november because my workplace British gas were offering some discount with them. called them up. the chap was really cheerful and signed me up saying it was no problem at all..he will get me signed up and that was it. i went to the gym
i went to the gym a couple of times and then decided i didnt have the time available to go to the gym especially since i moved house. it was too far away to get to. i contacted the gym and they told me to come in and fill a form which i did and they said that should be ok. i didnt receive any cancellation calls or anything.
a month later i recieved a text saying that i was in arrears as i had cancelled my direct debit. I called up the manchester fitness first , they said i had to give 1 months notice. Then i asked him to have a look at my account and he said was in a contract. its the first i had heard about it.
At no point was i made aware that it was a contract for 12 months. at no point when i went to cancel was i made aware of the cancellation period notice.
Now a debt collection agency called Cars are chasing me for the money
I want to get out of this because i feel that i was wrongly sold a membership. no mention of any contract. the guy was all smiles and made me sign my contract. I feel cheated with this whole thing
I want to take these guys to the book! please help!!!

You must have read the contract that you were signing including the terms and conditions??
Do you not have a copy of it?0 -

Sorry but what did you think you were signing when it said credit agreement ?"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

where is there any mention of a credit agreement. im not borrowing money from them. and if i dont use their services then where does the question of credit even come in?0

Unless Fitness First has changed its terms since I was a member then if your paying monthly by direct debit then you have signed a 12 month credit agreement.
That is how these gyms work and what it will have said on the forms you signed
However it will all be on the duplicate forms you will have received"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

You pay for the membership outright, and then repay the loan that paid for the membership. I've only seen council/local authority gyms actually operate on a monthly basis.0
