How many trailing fuchsias can you put in a small window box or is it bettet to uose a container (round)? I just bought a double trailing blackee at 99p and I do not know where to plant. I am very partial to fuchsias as they are long flowering. Thanks

Hi, trailing fuchsias are very pretty. Planting them in a window box would be fine, but I'd recommend adding a mulch to the top to slow down moisture evaporation. Pebbles would be perfect, you'd only need enough to cover the compost.
Smaller containers dry out quicker, so by mulching you are helping the plant's roots to maintain their water supply.

I don't know how many you can plant in your window box as I haven't seen it. But, you can plant densely in hanging baskets and window boxes as the plants will have room for the foliage to spread out. If it were mine, I'd plant about 4 trailing fuschias in a 1ft window box.

Hi loulou, you haven't said how big your window box is?? In any case a small window box IS fine you just need to make sure you keep it well watered late on in summer when everything has filled out and fighting for space.

I used to look at the sizes of things and plant accordingly with my window boxes and tubs but then decided to ignore that and plant everything much closer so that by the time they had filled out they looked fab.

    Good luck :D

    Happy moneysaving all.

The box is 50 cms. Black and quite sturdy from Morrisson, buy one get one free. I am not sure how many trailing giant double fuchsias I should put. I was thinking of putting some double begonias in between, will they be too cramped? At first I thought of using only trailing fuchsias but a bit concerned how the plants are going to hang over at the back. It took 15 plants to fill my hanging baskets with trailing lobelias, trailing sweet peas and violas. Just would like to have an idea what other gardeners use to fill their window boxes.
