I finished a three year capped rate in May. I payed £54 by DD, that went up to £73 when the capped rate finished, as I expected, but even though I am £47 in credit I have just had a letter which has reassessed my new payments at £96.
The letter says 'based on your current usage your new payment...'. Why can't they just say 'because prices are expected to rise'. If I am in credit for usage over the past 12 months it seemes to me that my usage has gone down.
Mine is a 4 bed semi too

I think you could be underpaying. My payments were £50 but now £65, since the price rises. Are you on capped? I'm in a similar house and it appears a similar situation with appliances!

I'm with BG (price fix) and pay £30 a month for gas which was set up as a monthly DD in May based on last year's usage. Gas heating/water and gas hob - everything else electric. Just had my quarterly bill (meter read) and cost was £42. We're in a 4 bed detached with a 17 year old boiler, but decent insulation and double glazing and only 2 of us who are out all day.

I've done things like turn the rads to '0' on the thermstats in the spare bedrooms and the 2nd rads in both the lounge and dining room (irrelevant this time of year I know). I cook batch where I can, so less hob usage too.

I also leave the heating on 24/7 at in the colder months, lower whilst out and turn up a few degrees when we get home. Supposed to be cheaper that way (friend experimented doing this a couple of years ago) so I started this too..also means I can take my coat off as soon as I get in the door! :rotfl:
    Back on the DFW Wagon:

    CC - £3,300 on 0% til 04/2020
    CC - £4,500 on 0% til 02/2019
    Loan - £12,063.84 as at 4/1/18

    npower are horrible.

Me and OH live in a 1 bed flat, and we had an agreement for ages with npower that we'd pay a DD of £30 a month for Gas and Elec. Bear in mind we are hardly at home, both work full time etc. Anyway, they then contacted us to say we owe £900 and would need to pay £150 a month to clear it. AGH! We're kind of disorganised (trying to change that!) and hadn't looked at our statements.

Feel quite silly admitting to that!

find your last four quarterly bills

work out how many 'units' you use
on the bill (small print on the back I think) it will tell you how to convert the number of units to money (use your last bill to get that lastest rates)
then divide by 12 which should be your approximate monthly DD.

Also check your last bill...does it show you to be in credit or debit ... another good indicator.
  • im not very happy with BG today either - based on estimated bills i have been paying 90 a month for gas and 66.50 for electric - because it is the summer holidays i have had the chance to go thro my finances and check meter readings etc - had a gas bill last week and although and they credited 134.00 into bank account but was still estimated much higher than actual useage - so i sent in actual readings last week via the web for gas and electric (electric had also been overestimated for day (by 7000 units!!!!!)use but under for night use by 2000 units. I heard nothing - so i called them today. the girl on the phone told my that altho my figures had been picked up there was no action started on them!!!!!! bet that wouldnt be the same if i owed them the money - anyway she has actioned them today and dropped my dd for gas to 60 a month and will review the electric one when i get the bill. Got to wait another 10day for that tho!!!!

I have just done Uswitch today.
I was with British Gas for both and my gas was £60 (heating only) and my electric was £88. I live in an average three bed semi and there are two adults and two teenage children.
I have switched to Powergen who say they can save me over £400 a year.
£2 saver club, over £200 now:
1p a day increase saving. Paid up to middle April
