Yes, there was a long queue in the post office the other day and someone gave out a tut as they came in.0 -
This is quite interesting...
Given that there are fears that the conagious nature of the government debt worries are spreading (portugal, spain, italy), could we see a similar spreading of this civil unrest?
I might just resurrect my social impacts thread...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
It happened with poll tax, but that was something added on rather than something taken away.
There will be grumbling of epic proportions though. Unless house prices really do go down, then I expect anarchy.0 -
I hope the German parliament rejects the bail out and the Greeks sink deeper into the soft, brown, malodorous stuff.
Which would be a terminally stupid thing for Germany to do.
Option 1) The strong nations bail out the weak. And I mean properly bail them out, not this half hearted and couterproductive idiocy Merkel has signed up to. Firm decisive action to guarantee all the PIIGS debt, and burn the speculators good and proper. The Eurozone as a whole suffers a lost decade, but it's bearable, just. And it's the price they must pay for a political folly and the last decade of keeping interest rates and currency valuations pegged to Germany and france's needs, not the PIIGS needs.
Option 2) Half hearted bailouts don't work, the speculators run riot, the contagion spreads, country after country falls, the Eurozone economy crashes and burns, Eurozone banks, including Germany's, start to fail, the Euro undergoes a catastrophic devaluation, and Germany undergoes an inflationary holocaust for a decade, which is how long they will need to keep base rates at zero and the currency debased to salvage the mess in the rest of Europe.
Merkel is an idiot for calling in the IMF and bowing to political pressure at home due to regional elections in Germany, France was right to warn against such a move, and we're seeing the results play out in real time now on the streets of Athens.
At the rate this is going, Germany will be humiliated and broken before it all ends, because of pride and stubborness.
Maybe we should let the Germans join the Pound instead..... Actually, not.... We can't afford to rescue their broken banks and outmoded manufacturing based economy.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

OK each and every person in greece now takes home around 30% less than they did lat year. Police are only earning €1200PM because they will lose bonus's.
Put some perspective in it, yes we will make cuts but it ain't going to be like what greece have had to do. Also we are not tied to a single currency which helps when the poop hit the fan.0 -

Authorities should come out with something like this "Due to all the rioting you morons did, we need to an extra 1% of your money on top now"This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
