Claiming part refund from motor dealer.. timelines?

Hi all,
On Saturday just gone I bought a new car, I part ex'd my existing car and financed the rest of the amount.
When I went to view the new car, there were a few issues that I am sorting out, but importantly, they looked my car over and I was given a part-ex figure for my existing car of £6500.
As I viewed the car late on a Saturday night, the dealership jotted down some rough numbers on a post it note for me. On here it clearly states that the part ex figure for my car is £6500.
We went to sign the papers a week later, they test drove my existing car, told me everything was fine, took the keys, we shook hands and I took my new car. They posted the receipt to us.
Now, my problem is that on the receipt they sent us, it says that the part-ex figure they gave for my car is only £6000. IE, they actually gave us £500 less than they said. I have got my calculator out, worked out all the numbers and they have indeed given us £500 less for my car.
Having spoken to them, they're not budging. So I now need to write a letter to them asking for my £500 back (either £500 off my finance, or £500 plus the interest that £500 would accrue in cash)
My question is, what timelines shall I give them? If I write and ask for the money back in 14 days or I'll take legal action, is that fair? Or should I give them longer? I have no problem at all in starting court proceedings. I've done it before.
