At the end of the day, this fiasco stopped us entering the European Monetary Union, which prevented us turning out worse than Greece.

It has also to be remembered that Labour supported us going into the ERM... at a higher level.

At a higher level? we went in at the top as it was

Yeah, the idea on both parties was to use the ERM as an excuse to carry out the kind of policies that would 'cure inflation', as it were. The labour party was all in favour of this, since it would occur under the conservative watch, and the conservatives would be blamed for it.

ERM never made much sence. Neither did going ahead with EMU, after the ERM failed, but the europeans kept their head in the sand on the issue.

(The pun was intended, but bad).

You are joking, if you think she would be any better off under a Tory govt you need to pull your head out of the sand.

Arguing under which government we would be better off under is rather futile. We are going to all be considerably worse off whoever gets in.

This one needs a strong dose of anti spin.

Leaving the ERM was a problem but it had much more to do with bad faith by our European colleagues than c0ck up by John Major's government. The ERM was the forerunner of a common currency. Such systems are supposed to benefit from common support. The Germans however gratuitously and recklessly let it be known that they would not support the £. This created an open season for speculators. When the speculators turned on the Franc, the Germans immediately went to their aid.

When Labour came to power, they inherited falling inflation, falling interest rates, falling unemployment and rising prosperty. For all the hatred and abuse heaped on him, John Major created most favourable economic climate for many generations. Like so many labour governments before Gordon Brown leaves the enonomy as an over populated smoking ruin.

You seam to forget that that is quite minor in comparison with the current black hole in the finances.

The difference being, the tories were happy to tell people things were bad, while the current 'government' is too scared to say anything.

    After the massive privatisations?

    Typical Tory stupidity here.

Perhaps you should read up on the disgraceful privatisation under Labour that was Actis and the CDC before thinking one party holds some sort of moral high ground.

    Trite.
