Finally got a new property to move to, with garden :j:j:j
But i have a problem, having a wander around to behind the 6ft fence, I see a neighbour gardening.. then her 4 adorable dogs came over to her gate a 2 second bark and that was it,
And there is my dog JRT x who is a barker, lack of socialization due to my illness, so my fault, i worry because when he is going to be in our garden, he won't see them but he will hear them and he will bark for England.
Right now i can't afford training, or £150 products to put around his neck to stop the barking.
I need every penny i can for removals and carpet and right now i only have £50 spare for that,
I don't need lectures on it's all my fault because I didn't 'bother' to socialize his as a puppy, I've been housebound for 10 months.
I've thought of continuously playing a track of dogs barking, yes he will bark but then eventually give up,(don't worry about my neighbours it'll be like payback time for me having to cope with extreme loud music for hours that vibrate my flat) i thought of this because when we go to OH's house he used to go mental with the yorkie next door who races out and barks, and my dog used to run out and go mental at him, but now just if he can be bothered might run out bark for a few seconds and then run back in. So on that basis, and i have ear plugs i wonder if playing dogs barking would eventually make my dog just give up?
Help

Don't blame yourself, my dog is 6 months, he's had a lot of socialisation (I take him to a class pretty much every week) and he still barks for england when he hears another dog bark, or a door bang, or somebody walk upstairs, or anything else really!! :rotfl: He's a cavalier king charles.
I'd be interested in reading anybody's tips on this as well because his barking is driving me mad!! Think happy & you'll be happy

One training method which I was told would work at some dog behaviour classes is to teach your dog to 'speak' on command. Then when they understand 'speak' (bark) you can teach them to stop on command. Then when they are running up and down the garden 'barking for England' you have a command which means stop barking. Have no idea if it works as I haven't had a foster dog long enough to try it and my boxer almost never barks.
Also worth remembering is barking is their way of shouting. You screaming at them to shut up is actually reinforcing what they are doing. They shout, you shout, lets all shout together! (I am of course assuming this is what you do as I have been known to do it! Sorry if I am completely wrong!)0 -

I've tried that as I read it somewhere else. If he started barking at something but then stopped and I said "talk" he would bark again but if he was just sat there playing he wouldn't bakr at all. And I think he does know when i'm telling him to "be quiet" (I always praise him if he does stop barking after saying that) because he'll go from barking/howling to just doing a little yap. I think he always wants the final word :rotfl: He does usually then start howling again so it doesn't work for us just yet.
Sorry for hijacking your thread OP

I distract my dog when in the garden, we have 2 staffs next door who bark quite a bit, when my dog goes out in the garden i go out too and take a tug rope or a ball and as the other dogs barks he is too engrossed in his game with me to take note, I then give him a treat for doing well and praise him loads when he comes back in,
He has moments when he rushes out to the adjoining fence to bark but will stop within 2 barks as i make sure i grab a toy and distract him.
It took literally a few days to calm his barking at the other dogs, but you have to put the effort in.
I also use that playful voice *come on Topsy, lets grab a ball* and he responds encouragingly and follows me back inside and stops reacting to the other dogs.
Not sure if that will help you but it has for mine, my dog is chipoo x yorkie.

There is nothing wrong with a dog barking. But you need to control it so that the dog alerts you to something that its bothered about and then realises thats the end of its job and its up to you to go and see who is outside etc...
The way we got our staff to stop barking at people walking past the window (we live next to a public right of way) was to allow her to bark once and then send her to her bed. You just need a process your happy with for the dog when it barks or wants to bark. So that may be sending them to there bed or getting them to sit or lay down but just something. You need a lot of patience but we got there in the end. Now she only barks when someone stops outside the window and will stop when told.
The teaching them to bark on command is also a good idea but just be careful as they end up barking a lot while your training them and if you use treats to make them bark on command just be careful you don't teach them if they bark they get a treat as your end with the dog seeing something it wants and then going up to people and barking till they get it if you don't get it right.
Please don't use a anti-barking tool as your dog will end up scared to bark which is not a good thing. There is nothing wrong with dogs barking only when it causes a nusiance. You just need to train your dog. You can always go to the libabary and borrow a book on dog training if you need further help or search on the internet for techniques.
You need to be careful to pressure yourself to do it in two weeks. As thats when you could loose your patience and as someone pointed out above the second you start shouting at your dog then it thinks your joining in with the barking.
If your worried about upsetting your neighbours then just explain to them the situation and then your doing your best to deal with it and ask them to contact you if there is a problem.0 -

Mupette, it's much easier to teach a dog to do something than it is to teach them not to do something.
If you move in and you let your dog bark and then correct him you may stop the barking at that moment but it may create other problems and he'll still bark next time you are not there to correct him.
Doing the CM poking or squirting with water as someone suggested will teach him to start avoiding you.
I would suggest that you create good habits so that going in the garden is for doing things other than barking.
Move in with the attitude that he won't bark in the garden instead of that he will and how to stop it
Playing with him out there as someone suggested is a great idea but don't wait for him to think about barking and then try and distract him because you will most likely struggle, just go out and play, take a wee break, play again and then come in.
I'd also suggest feeding him in the garden from your hand. If you feed a dry food put it in your pocket and go outside with him and hand feed him. (If you feed wet food then put it in a pouch perhaps) Do this by saying his name in an excited voice as you move backwards and he comes towards you and takes the food from your hand.
If you do this for everything that he eats then imagine what he will do everytime you say his name when you are both in the garden.
Have him on a lead to start with everytime you are in the garden.
Perhaps liase with the neighbour so that you can have a few practice sessions out there when she won't be out with her dogs to start with.
Clicker training is great for this sort of thing as well. You could teach him to do anything that is incompatable with barking.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0
