paid to wrong paypal account

i have made a silly mistake. i recently added a different address to pay via paypal to my account. when listing my items for sale by mistake i put the wrong email address down. .com instead of .co.uk. my buyers have paid to the wrong address and the status on eBay is say "waiting for pending paypal payment" shown with a little egg timer icon. what can i do about this? only trouble is that the .com email address is registered by someone else - not me. do i contact my buyers? or contact paypal? or the person at the .com address? many thanks

Contact the buyers and ask them to cancel the payment. I did the same thing once.

The chances of someone with a virtually identical email address to you having a paypal account aren't that strong :)

Just read your post a bit more carefully and you obviously think that there IS an account for that address - but I think the egg timer suggests there isn't.

Contact the buyer , paypal and the email address the money was sent to and just explain the situation .

yes sorry about my unclear post. i was in a bit of a "kafuffle" when i realised what i had done.

i'll email them now. just a bit worried someone registered an identical email address after realising what i'd done. hehe maybe i am being a bit paranoid. but is a bit strange - obviously its a free email address i am using, so i tried registering for the .com version and it had already been taken. hmmm.

anyway will be able to resolve this with paypal if problems arise?

thanks for easing the worry of my stupidity!

Seriously, get the buyers to cancel the payment :) There should be a cancel button next to the transaction in their paypal account. Even if the email address is taken, they've probably not got a paypal account for it.

If there isn't a paypal account associated with the payment then the buyer should be able to cancel the payment. However, if there is a paypal account then the buyer cannot recall their payment and it will have to be sent back by the person with the paypal account.

There is even an anomoly where there might be a paypal account associated with the payment but the account is not currently live. In that case the buyer cannot recall the payment but can only wait for it to bounce back on day 30 if it is not claimed.

I had this happen to me once, seller had done somehting similar to the the OP but in that instance had an account, say johnsmith1 and had lost the password, so opened johnsmith2 instead but all payments went to johnsmith1. As the original account had started to be opened (before he lost the password) it merely showed as unclaimed for 30 days and then bounced back. The seller could not cancel the payment as he had no access to the account to reset up the paypal account, and I could not recall it as I had no cancel button and it just showed as unclaimed which was something entirely different.

The difficulty here is that now the oP has written to the owner of the wrong account, if they opened a paypal account using that email address they could claim the payment.
