    Power of Attorney would

a require your uncle to be well enough to give it

b likely take several months anyway

If he can sign a form SOME banks would be willing to make you a signatory on his account.

You could write to his bank asking them to cancel the dd. He must sign the letter though.

I agree with pmduk. If you have a printer then print a letter from him and then get him to sign it. That way, at least it would be legal.

This is also what I would do. It doesn't matter who writes/types the letter, as long as your uncle signs it.

You could also enquire at the bank about third party access. When your uncle has signed a form, the bank will allow you to make basic transactions on the account.

Thanks everyone above for advice, I am going to leave it in the hope the electricity company dont take any more money out, its just last month it said in bank statment first DD payment but he had seemingly left them to go to other company which he then cancelled, god love him he is nearly 90 and was ill at the time of all this carry on with elec/gas suppliers, so think he has muddled it all up. I will be paying his bill for now eek so he has a supplier and hopefully when he gets out I can revert it back to his bank details, he has been in hospital for 7 weeks now so not good and I dont want to worry him with all this mess, appreciate the help tho.
If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of car payments.;)
