Stocks & shares can have a roller coaster ride but over the long term they ought to outperform savings accounts. Since you are talking about the long term (16+ years) I would favour S&S for a CTF, but go for whatever you feel comfortable with.

What are you comfortable with? Do you have any stocks / shares investments and are you comfortable with volitility in the value of the investments?

If you do, and you are comfortable with investments then it may be a worthwhile thing to do.

If you don't and are not comfortable with volatility then probably not as your investment would probably fall at some point (as markets do) and you would likely sell/transfer the investment in to cash at the bottom a lose money.

    Its down to you really.

For info, my DD CTF is is S&S with SelfTrade which I invest/trade on her behalf.
