hot water or steam, (and scraping) is the answer to removing the glue residue.
fill in any cracks and then sand it down. its a lot of hard work though.
hence the skimming option is the best way.
prob about 200 quid per ceiling on average.Get some gorm.0 -
i'm interested in your thread for similar reasons. I have just moved to a 1970s house with awful Artex. I've read somewhere it can be steamed off but risk findint same undulations etc as the OP.
My sparky's friend who is a plasterer has been round and said the Artex has never been painted over and that I must paint it with a vinyl silk before skimming or the plaster wont stick?
True or false?
he has quoted me 2 bedrooms and the landing for £700 cash.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
hot water/steam will remove artex. but its an awful messy job.
ive never heard of the artex paint thing, but plasterers will criss cross "scratch" any surface to get a bond.Get some gorm.0 -

Depends what "style" of artex it is if its little stipples - these can be srcaped off (BE AWARE THOUGH THAT SOME ARTEX CONTAINS ASBESTOS - The real rason why we prefere overboarding not for profit) If it is like a wavey patern - known as "broken leather" this can be skimmed onto as it is (Three coats instead of the normal two)
My sparky's friend who is a plasterer has been round and said the Artex has never been painted over and that I must paint it with a vinyl silk :eek::eek: YOU SURE YOU HEARD HIM CORRECTLY? Silks a nightmare nothing will "key" to it - remove as much silk as possible and maybe "score" it before skimming or the plaster wont stick!
he has quoted me 2 bedrooms and the landing for £700 cash Is this for the ceilings only? If hes priced for three days then fair enough - difficult to say without seeing the state of the ceilings, deapth of artex, size of ceiling etc etc .

Hello Plasterer.
thanks for your advice, i thought the chap was talking a bit of bullshyte. I had my last house skimmed (walls) as the plaster came off when i took the woodchip off. I pva'd the walls to help that plasterer. I thought that putting silk on would be a bit daft tbh.
It's the stippling effect. I will get another quote in i think, not for the price necessarily, but i've lost a bit of confidence in him - if i ever had any to begin with!Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -

I will get another quote in i think, not for the price necessarily, but i've lost a bit of confidence in him - if i ever had any to begin with!agree a price with him/her (don't tell him about the £700 though - just see what he/she says) what size areas are we talking here? If you decide to do the prepping yourself ie de-nipple, score and pva you'll save a small fortune (BARE IN MIND WHAT I SAID ABOUT ASBESTOS ETC) Speak to whoever quotes next and he/she will tell you how they expect the preping/standard of prepping etc etc. If they agree you can prep and they are happy with what you have achieved these 3 ceilings should cost no more than £400. A good plasterer will get all three done in a day with a labourer It sounds like 3 "sets" to me Unless 2 ceilings are small then it would be 2 sets
Day and a half max (however you will get charged 2 days this being the case - if this is the case have you got maybe another wall or 2 that they could skim for the second half day- Same amount of money + another tenner for a couple of bags of skim

thanks P. I've bought the local paper lunchtime as there always seems to be a few guys advertising in there.
the plasterers on diynot forum pretty much doubled up in laughter from their responses too!
It's a 3 bed semi and the rooms are not massive, beds 1 and 2 are good sized doulbes and 1 single. the hall and landing are small (compared to my last 3 bed semi).
will take on board your advice re asbestos.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
