Thought I'd bump this thread as it is something I was wanting to look into more. Even if it's not known who covers ash, I'm interested in who's the best insurer is overall.

C'mon someone must know a thing or two!

I can on here to ask the same question!

We have booked flights (with ryanair) and seperate accomdation for our summer holiday. I was hoping that I could purchase some sort of insurance so that if our flights get cancelled we would get back the cost of our accomodation. Does such cover exist?

We have travel insurance with our bank account called Co-op Worldwide travel insurance and if you read here on page 20 it sounds like you would be covered if you booked both seperately. Have a read and see what you think.

I can only speak from personal experience so apologies before I get accused of spamming from certain sections of the board.

We sell a lot of travel insurance from AXA, Towergate, Citybond, PJ Hayman, Equity Redstar, Sunworld Plus and Fortis. Out all the companies we deal with Fortis are by far the best when it comes to settling claims and in respect of the volcanic ash they were one of a few companies that honoured claims. For the avoidance of bias other companies also paid out but I can only speak confidently about the insurers i deal with.

Fortis insurance is available at all good brokers, they also have a direct arm called RIAS and they underwrite the Post Office travel insurance policy.

In all cases please make your own mind up where you buy from, I'm only sharing my experiences and they should not be taken as gospel.

    Benjanim,

I have not purchased insurance yet , but wondering as its now a known risk I was wondering if they would still cover it. Basically I'm worried our long planned and saved for summer holiday will go t*ts up and am prepared to pay a reasonable amount for some sort of insurance so that if we can't fly we don't lose the accommodation costs etc.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I have just spoken with Fortis and what they have said is that any policy taken out now for a trip in the next couple of weeks would not be covered because the event (ash cloud) has already occured. If you took a policy out with them before the event happend you would be covered. In the unlikely event that a new volcanic ash cloud happend you would be covered as this would be treated as a new event.

If your holiday is in the next few weeks I think you are going to struggle to get a new insurance policy that will cover it.
