It all depends on the reasons that you are doing a degree. If it's for a job at the end of it and social work is what you've set your heart on then it's worth trying again or approaching it from another direction as other people here have said. If it's for general interest and the academic development that you will gain with a degree then my advice is to go for criminology.

I'm in the middle of a criminology doctorate and have a batchelors and masters in the subject and I love it! I similarly only applied because crime was something that I was interested in, I didn't really know what criminology was when I started. Queens is a great uni for crim, and job wise there are many options depending on your interests in the areas of - prisons, the courts, probation, youth justice, policing, the home office, ministry of justice, crime prevention/reduction, research, victim support services, and many others. It may be the case that some with criminology degrees end up not immediately using it vocationally but that may depend on the type of person and above all else it's really interesting and equips you with knowledge and skills that are useful in any profession.

Whatever you feel is the best for you is the way to go, and I wish you the best of luck with your decisions. I just felt that criminology needed a 'bigging up' on this thread! :T

Just wanted to post as I have read this thread with interest. I applied to do SW at two uni's and got rejected by my first choice which started me off questioning whether I was up to it. I went for my second interview and got offered a place, but I ended up declining it in favour of the Health and Social care foundation degree at my local college as I figured travelling for 4 hours a day as well as looking after 5 children and doing coursework etc would be too much and I would end up going nuts (again). My plan is to do the FD and then a top up year to get the honours degree.
