Can someone advise

Hi

I hope someone can give me a bit of advice.

Car started playing up yesterday (Corsa 1.2 SXI 03 registered 52 plate), Wouldn't start at first but turned over on 3rd try. Fisrt 2 tries, there was nothing there at all. When I put foot on accelerator, it wa sluggush then a bit jumpy but after that it was fine, gave it a good run up the motorway.

Today, it wouldn't start so i got a jump start from a neighbour and drove it to work (needed to be a mile away from home too for AA - this was just in case).

Took it to the garage and they gave it the once over and said I needed a new battery - great, that I can deal with. I couldn't leave it there though, started asking qustions about other stuff that was bothering me and these are detailed below:
  1. Coolant keeps disappearing into thin air - topping it up every 2 weeks
  2. Oil light keeps coming on every time I slow to a stop but when I go again, it goes off
  3. 2 months ago, my DS took cap off oil and it was covered in orange/brown gunge, cleaned it off and he said you need an oil change. Today, the garage took it off and it was again covered in gunge - I have not done the oil change as this was going to get done at end of this month. There is loads of oil in so not lacking there.
Garage guy has come to the conclusion that the head gasket has gone and it will cost in the region of £500/£600 to sort. That is before they do my discs and pads, battery and MOT.

Does this sound right given the list of faults listed above?

I have the money for the discs/pads and MOT plus another £100 for just in case they found something else but not £600 for a head gasket.

Your advice would be very much appeciated.

Thanks

Head gasket failure will cause water to leak from the cooling system into the oil forming the gunge.

I was always told to watch out for gunge/foam on the oil filler cap, as it's a sign of the head gasket going.

    Sorry! Expensive.
