hi there firstly can anyone tell me if worcester greenstar is the same as worcester bosch? We now have to have a new boiler as a matter of urgency after 5 weeks of problems culminating in the boiler being switched on by a well-meaning relative while we were abroad as they didn't realise the thermostat had gone. OH has seen inside the boiler today when plumber was here and he says the heat must have been so intense it's welded electrical wires to the boiler - apparently we're lucky the house didn't blow up. we've been quoted £1600 for supply and fit of worcester bosch cdi 30. I've been doing a bit of research and this seems to be about £850 to purchase (probably even cheaper for the plumber) so just wondering where the other cost is going - presumably not labour as he's doing the job in one day and we are to pay the electrician separately. Are there other materials he will have to buy? Also when looking up the above model, it says suitable for small to medium house and ours is a 4 bed detached, no double-glazing 100 years old and with 14 rediators. I'm not doubting the plumber - we have used him over about 5 years and he has always been reliable and fair in his prices but this is a big expense and want to make the right decision - have read (maybe on here) about plumbers getting discounts on this make of boiler but I must say it comes near the top in Which? reliability surveys. #would appreciate any advice as he's coming to do the job in a couple of days. Just one more thing - should he be flushing out the radiators? - they were installed 14 years ago - he's not mentioned it but others have said it's essential? thanks

If your plumber is quoting you £1600 to supply and fit a 30cdi then grab him by both hands and don't let go of him. You are not just paying him a days wage, firstly unless he is going to make some kind of profit, then there is no point in him being there. If he does the job correctly you will be getting a bargain at that price roughly the same price it would have cost you 10 years ago, even though the plumbers costs will have gone up, i.e. he has to get certified and registered + public liability insurance + fittings and copper pipe + tools + van + fuel the chances are he is also VAT registered. There is also a trade price and a retail price.... What you see advertised on the internet is sometimes misleading. Boiler cost so and so, but you wont get either the flue or a programmer with that, just the bare boiler and then you have to wait all day for it to be delivered or sometimes not as the case may be. People are in business to make a profit and a living you know....:D0

Oh and Bosch, Greenstar and Worcester are all the same. Does he have to flush the system? Only a hot flush with something like setinel or fernox no more than that unless of course you are on about a power flush, which is an entirely different job altogether and has a cost factor involved and if he does that within the price of £1600 he will be doing the job at a loss...0

thanks for the info - I kniw it doesn't sound like it but I do believe in a fair day's pay for a fair day's work and actually i think there might be 2 of them. do you recommend this boiler for a house our size. We have always been pleased with our previous one (until it stopped working obviously!) and this was because you could feel it heating the house after only about 20 minutes so we want to make sure we're getting one of an adequate size. thanks again.0

Visit the Worcester Bosch website, can't put a link as I'm a newbie:D click the tab that says find a boiler fill out the remaining questions including how many bathrooms you have, click the tab that say's find a boiler again. Hey presto theres your answer. Although I'm sure there'll be many on here who will say just stick a 24kw boiler in and that'll be alright:mad:
Well I'm an accredited Worcester Bosch installer of both their boilers and solar systems so I would have to say yes I do recommend them. The customer service they offer is probably the best of all the boiler manufactures currently available. Having visted their factory in Worcester everything is tested thoroughly before it leaves the production line. The customer service centre has around 30 people in it and if you call they answer the phone within 3 or 4 rings even @ 8 in the evening. If you have an issue with your boiler they will turn up when it suits you. Finally the only boiler model they actually make at the Worcester factory are the 24 & 28Kw greenstar juniors everything else is made in Germany.0 -
I was charged £600 labour, one days installation to fit my W jun 28boiler. it took one man one lad, and couple of hours of the boss time to do the job. It took them till after 6 to finish so its a lot of work. My total price was mates rates, cash total £1200.
I think you are getting a very good price .0 -
thanks for all your help much appreciated. to answer a couple of questions it is the "heat only" boiler that he is installing. also, i did go on the worcester bosch website and it suggested the 30 cdi - but on a couple of the website recommended on here for purchasing boilers, that was where it said the 30 was for small/medium house and the 40 for a large house.0

What output is your exisiting boiler, and did you always feel warm enough?
30Kw = 102360btu's, in case your existing boiler is in old money.0 -
don't know offhand will have a look - will it say on the outside of the boiler? and yes we've always been warm enough. in fact the thermostat on the wall rarely was put above about 17 degrees.0

couldn't see the wattage in the dim light in the cellar but it's an ideal mexico super 2 - about 14 years old0
