Seller can't accept payment

I've won an auction and payed via PayPal using my credit card. Now the seller says their PayPal won't allow them to accept credit card payment.
The auction stated PayPal as the only means of payment and had all credit cards listed next to the PayPal logo.
The item is quite expensive and the only reason I could get it is that I can pay off the credit card in a months time so no chance of using a debit card or cash.
I know you can upgrade your accaount to accept credit cards but can I require the seller to do this? Can I or should I hold them to the auction or their stated forms of payment?
If they refuse to accept a credit card at all how do I cancel the auction or prevent them from reporting me as a non-paying bidder?

It might be that the seller simply doesn't realise that they need an upgraded Paypal account to accept credit card payments. You could email them pointing them at the relevant Paypal page.
If they won't upgrade their account, there is nothing sensible that you can do to force them. Just recall your Paypal payment and forget it.
If they report you as a NPB you could try contacting ebay, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
This is a perfect reason why it is a good idea to use disposable ebay buying account (and keep a separate account for selling). When you run into problems like this, you can just leave a vicious neg and then walk away from the account and set up a new one.0 -

It is up to the seller to ensure that he has listed the correct payment methods, if he cannot accept the method he has chosen then he needs to find another method that suits *you*. If he cannot find another method of payment that you are happy with then you should report him to ebay as a non performing seller.
In the first instance i would do as has already been suggested and politely ask the seller whether he needs to upgrade his account to accept thi spayment, he might simply not have read the payment details.
Also, has he actually returned your payment yet? As you paid via credit card there is a chance that you will have the debit going out one day and the returned payment not getting back to the card for a few days. Payments from the CC are instant, returns are not.

I did this in the past by mistake and didn't realise. As you have the option to downgrade once only, I upgraded my account, accepted the payment and then downgraded again, before making sure all my future auctions were clear that I could only accept non-credit-card paypal payments. Maybe the seller would do that?0

paypal doesnt differentiate between accounts as far as the advertising goes.
If you put paypal as an option, you get the credit card logo's no matter which account you have. right ??
If the seller is forced to upgrade to accept this payment, will keldin be willing to pay the paypal fees arising from accepting a credit card payment, this could be an extra 4% ?If only everything in life was as reliable...AS ME !!

You cannot claim to accept paypal unless you accept all paypal methods including credit cards. By ticking the box to say that he accepts paypal the invoice defaults to that automatically and gives a direct link to the paypal payment page.
This is the sellers problem, he stated he accepted paypal so he either accepts it or risks being reported as a non performing seller.
He is not allowed to charge a fee for accepting paypal, whether or not that was stated in the original auction terms.

No point in having a paypal account if you are forced to give up your free account to accept a credit card.
What is the point of them offering you a free account if you can't use it ?If only everything in life was as reliable...AS ME !!

Free paypal accounts are great for people who use them to buy things but not to sell. Don't forget as well that paypal isn't just used on ebay it is used by various other sites and organisations online.
As a seller though I agree that the 'free' account is useless.
