Hi all,
I have med sized garden which the other owners left in a mess to overgrow which has now been strimmed down. My question is i want to grass seed the area after the summer and need some advice on how to keep control of the weeds for now until i start work on it.
Have been looking on ebay and see you can purhcase a black mesh weed control fabric. Is this stuff any good

Glyphosate it now and again in few week when seeds have germinated. TBH I'd use turf rather than grass seed, it takes ages and you get weeds seeds coming back in.0

I have a patch I'll be putting to lawn in the autumn. I'm going to be covering it in black plastic from a builders' merchant. This will kill everything in a few months providing you don't allow anything to peep out from it.0

The woven landscape fabric is excellent at keeping weeds down if it is good quality - i.e. the tighter the weave the better. Non-woven 'fleece' type fabric does not keep weeds down on its own but needs a two inch thick mulch layer on top to be effective.
You could also use black dpc sheets which are even better than the woven landscape fabric for keeping weeds down but is more affected by high winds and does not let the rain in. As it won't let the rain in for a seedbed you could find yoiurself having to water the ground to prepare it.
Alternatively you could use old carpets or large sheets of cardboard. Both look untidy but they are effective. Try friends, neighbours or skip-diving for anything suitable to use.0
