turned down for missed payment thats not my fault -- any advice?

I've just been turned down for a mortgage because of a late payment that wasn't my fault, it is the only late payment on my record.
We booked a last minute holiday via Eurocamp last summer, Eurocamp charged my debit card twice, this led to a monthly credit card payment getting bounced. Because we were away for the whole of August I only found out when I got back and it was too late to stop them putting a late marking on my credit report. Other than that I am flawless and my Experian score is 977.
Is there anything I can do about this late mark on my credit record?

Not a great deal. If that is the only blip on your file then either get a broker or look at a different lender.0

mortgage was through a broker, with Abbey. any suggestions of who else to speak to. Issue is we only have 10% deposit so they are being really strict.0

It may well not even be that one missed payment that is the issue. Some lenders just don't want to do business at 90% ltv despite offering products, and so they turn away all but the very highest scoring business.
RBS/Natwest scoring tends to be a bit more lenient in my experience compared to Abbey, equally might be worth speaking to your own bank.0 -
Everyone has occasional experiences like that described in the OP. I have great difficulty believing that a single missed payment, put right after a month, made any difference to the decision.0

well, this was the reason given by Abbey to the Broker, like I say other than that my score is 977 so I was surprised this was a deal breaker.0

If you want to explain the circumstances behind the missed payment you can add a note to your credit report. Simply send a short statement to the relevant credit reference agencies and they will include it with future reports. If you do this, be sure to remove the note(s) when the late payment drops off your record, usually after three years. It will slow your applications down a bit, as each lender has to read your note, but if it helps you it might be worth it.
