I am so annoyed:mad:.I was out yesterday and when i got home my brother inlaw told me bt had been on the phone and that i owed them money .BT told him how much, when it had to be paid and so on.I thought they were not aloud to give that info away,am i correct?

I have had nothing but problems with bt.I was on a montly bill which they changed to 3 monthly without my knowledge,I had no internet or phone for 2 weeks as the hub was faulty took them over 2 weeks for me to get another. They have sent me 2 letters saying they had made a mistake on my bill and had over charged me.I just want an easy phone contract not all this hassle but i am stuck in contract for another 11 month and they want £299 to cancel:eek:.What can i do?

I'm guessing your brother isn't called Nicole, so you don't share the same name... you're correct, the caller is meant to confirm they are speaking with the account holder not just anyone who happens to answer.

As regards the incompetence and billing errors, there isn't that much that you can do - while failure to perform a contract is grounds for termination, in practice it's not quite so easy.

If you've had enough, you could leave the ball in BT's court to sort the billing out before you pay (assuming you haven't been mad enough to give BT a direct debit mandate) - what will most likely happen is that your phone line will be cut off and the account shut down e.g. BT terminate the contract, not you.

Respond to letters with letters and leave the ball in their court AFTER paying what you believe you do owe - that's important (rather than simply not paying anything) - thus you have done everything you could have done and have documentation to back up your assertion that the contract was effectively ended by the supplier so a magistrate (if it got to that) could clearly see that the contract was frustrated by the payee's incompetence.

However be prepared for hassle, being without a phone line for some time before you can get another one put in and endless letters from debt collection agencies to pop in the bin. Should you simply migrate away in frustration you'll be in breach and liable for early termination charges.

    Hi Nicolefrenzy,

I am sorry to hear of the problems you have had with BT and that details of your account were discussed with your brother in error, this should not have happened. I would like to help you with your complaint. Please could you email me your BT account details? My email address can be found by clicking on my profile.

    Thanks
