Splitting it into smaller journeys does work, but it takes a bit of time and patience to make sure that you are getting a better price. Tbh, I would just go book on one of the train companies websites and be done with it, not sure its worth the fuss.

Again, without any dates/times its difficult to give you a definate answer, but for a walkon fare that can bought anytime but travelling off peak then try splitting at Stoke on Trent.
Rugby to Manchester Off Peak return £39.90
Rugby to Stoke-On-Trent Super Off Peak £11
Stoke-On-Trent to Manchester £9.70 Off Peak Return (Virgin Trains Only)
Total £20.70 so around 50% saving

I just picked one date, 16 June, and can see Advance Singles at £6 or £6.50 each way for evening travel.

No idea whether that info is of any use though.
  • And the usual advice: don't use thetrainline.com or raileasy.co.uk to book. Both charge booking and credit card fees which can be avoided by using one of the train operating companies' web site.
  • Wish I'd read this before I stupidly bought a ticket for a local journey. I paid £12.10 which included a £1 booking fee. A friend bought a ticket from the station counter for £11.10. So rather than 'saving 43%' as thetrainline claim, I'm actually £1 out of pocket.

thetrainline.com's adverts are totally misleading. Any ticket available from them is available from anyone else too at the same price. That includes online, phone and ticket office.
