Do I call the school if son off sick?

Options
Hello,

This is no doubt a daft question but I have looked on the school's website and can see no policy that helps me out here.

My son is in Reception class at school and has been sick all night. Of course he's not going to school today and possibly not tomorrow either but I'm unclear as to whether it's a requirement to inform the school or not.

When I was a child it was simply a case of Mum sending me back to school with a note explaining my absence but with today's laws on unauthorised absences and things I'm not sure whether that is enough. I also don't want to bother the receptionist if it's unecessary to call.

Anyone know what the correct thing to do is?

Many thanks!

yeah its best to phone and let them know, and if he is being sick depending on your school, you have to keep them off for 24 or 48 hours after he was last sick, our school is 24, the one down the road is 48, so its best ask when you ring at 9am
If we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

I know that some schools will class it as an absence if they are not informed at the start of a sickness even though a letter of explanation is provided on his/her return to school.

    Play safe and tell them.

most schools now will actually call you if you haven't called or your child hasn't turned up by 9.30 so yes, ring.

Ring them or chuck an email in - most will ring you and check why they're not in if they haven't heard from you. Probably won't get an answer in the office till about 8.45 as a general rule (unless someone's in there photocopying or something) but there should be an answerphone on that you can leave a message with.

Yes, definitely call or email to let them know.

Some schools also request a letter when they return, but dd's doesn't.

It is best to keep him off for 48 hours after he is last sick - that's the general advice and will hopefully avoid it spreading round the school.

Not a daft question btw - I had a few like that when mine first started school!

My son's school asks that you ring in the morning, and then write a letter when they go back to say why they were off.

My daughter's school has the policy that you must ring everyday that they are off, and you must ring before 10.00am or they will ring you to find out why they are not at school. We do not have to send a letter in.
