Im afraid dojoman is correct. You either have to have a credit card or put down a large deposit in cash and then only a small majority might accept this, I had no luck funding one.

We wanted to hire a van for moving house, in the end I had to get my dad to do it all.

Budget, Enterprise, carhire3000 and Alamo all accept Visa Debit the only difference is instead of authorising the amount and releasing it again, the take it and refund it.

I think you can use a debit card. It doesn't have to a credit card.

However, you need to be careful as some of the BIG car leasing companies e.g enterprise etc might want £100 or even £200 deposit. I would go with smaller local companies - look in the yellow pages, they are not only cheaper but some don't even take a deposit at all. I usally shop for these ones!

For what it's worth, I have used the Visa Electron that came with my Co-Op Cash Minder Account several times with Avis.

The only cards that Enterprise do not accept are Solo and Visa Electron cards. They do physically take a deposit from your account and that amount varies from region in the UK. Some areas it is £150, some it is £250.
