Cheapest way to get phone connected for a short term?

SWMBO is planning to move to a rented property for 6 months or so in the near future. It has been empty for a while and has just been renovated. Although the agent can't confirm it appears the phone line is disconnected so presumably she will need to pay to get it reconnected.

(Sorry for being vague, I've never had a phone contract myself, having access to NTL from the first time I needed to arrange my own phone)

It looks like BT would charge £130 to reconnect the line - is there any cheaper way to do it? Virgin seem to only want around £40 but this is for a minimum 12 months. Would people like TalkTalk be able to do the reconnection or can only BT do this?

She mainly wants broadband - not really that bothered about a phone as for the few calls she makes it would be cheaper to use her mobile, but I don't know if broadband is available without a phone as part of the package?

As I say, initially she is only considering 6 months, may extend to a year if things work out but it is not intended to be a long term thing so initially minimum cost over the first 6 months is the main criteria.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Post Office Home Phone is your only hope for a contract of less than 12 months.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Maybe IDNET, http://www.idnet.net/solutions/home/phone/ , £10.99 p/m line rental only, 1 month contracts.
Can't see any pitfalls myself contractwise, perhaps others may.
Also usefull when migrating voice from full LLU as an alternative to BT Retail.
