someone bashed my drivers side mirror

Yesterday out and about OH driving my car as i wasn't up to it, (he's a named driver on insurance)
Driving down a back road and a car was i assume doing about about 30 lots of room on their side of the road, at the last second swerves towards us and knocks the drivers wing mirror, and didn't stop, we know they would of heard it and would of had damaged to their car, although OH said that our car (nissan note) was higher than theirs so thinks something was either hanging out a window (although now i think someone did it deliberately stuck something out as they went past) but can't remember actually seeing anything. And now the glass is smashed but not coming away, but wobbly too.

They didn't stop but went too fast for me to turn and try and see what details i could get.... i don't think green car is anything to go on, lol

I have a motability car so no problem, but i will have to pay an excess.
does anyone know prices, I've tried ebay, and on-line parts websites but they all want email addresses but don't tell you how much.

I need to find out if it's worth having done private or via insurance

Is it just the glass that is damaged? If so you can get replacement glass fom halfords for under £10, and fit it yourself. It's very easy to do.

need some mechanical input here, if the glass is wobbly, does that mean its more than the glass that needs replacing?

The glass most likely has plastic prongs on the back that slot into place in the miror casing. If these break then it will be wobbly.
Try and get the glass from a scrapyard or Halfords/motor factors, it won't cost that much.Cover the old glass with tape if you are worried about it cutting your hand when removing it to check.

    Is the mirror heated?
If so then to keep that feature you'll need to buy a mirror with a heating element on the back.

it's a Nissan note, assecenta 2009, only got it beginning of Nov.
not sure that it has heating element, that was probably an optional extra

You can normally get away with sticking the new mirror over the old one, but will loose the ability to remotely change it's position from the inside of the car. Look for someone breaking their Nissan Note on eBay and ask for the wing mirror glass. Shouldn't cost more than £10.

Here's an example link. You can get the whole mirror assembly off eBay for around £60 or again, ask someone breaking one.
