exam papers with multiple choice are done by computers nowadays, so unless you have a relevant degree in the subject you want to mark I can't see such a job like this existing.0

I think I will contact OCR myself tomorrow as this is ridiculous - an unqualified person marking exam papers who do not have the subject knowledge? its like me marking french papers -I have my teaching qualification but i do not have the faintest clue when it comes to french. I still believe you are mistaken - if not then we must get the system changed immediately!O/S Debt: PL £[STRIKE]15207.34[/STRIKE] £9884.55; HSBC £4060.99; Tesco£1430.15; M&S £5990.17; Virgin [STRIKE]£5158.69[/STRIKE] £4210.14; Egg £4619.00; O/S = ££30,292.42 AIM - To Be Debt Free 56 months0

No it's true.. university students have done it for subjects they don't even have a clue about. I may try myself in my 2nd or 3rd year of university if i feel confident enough in my ICT degree to mark ICT papers. There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't0 -
Up here in Scotland you need to have experience of teaching the subject and level before the Scottish Qualifications Authority will consider you.
3rd year of marking at Higher level (A-Level ish), pay not great.

Your clearly did not understand what I previously said.
You do not need teaching qualifications or teaching experience. I did not say 'you do not need subject qualification or subject experience'. As you do not have qualifications in French, you would obviously not be able to mark French papers.0 -

Oh I think I understand you perfectly - no need for that tone!!!
It will be something that we will need to address with the Education Sec as this cannot be allowed (should it be true) however it would answer the question as to why students were leaving school/college with such excellent grades!!O/S Debt: PL £[STRIKE]15207.34[/STRIKE] £9884.55; HSBC £4060.99; Tesco£1430.15; M&S £5990.17; Virgin [STRIKE]£5158.69[/STRIKE] £4210.14; Egg £4619.00; O/S = ££30,292.42 AIM - To Be Debt Free 56 months0 -
The quick answer is that it depends on both the board and the subject.
AQA (the old NEAB-and still the major exam board) require not only a degree and teaching qualification in the subject but two years teaching experience. NO exceptions
EDEXCELL A degree in the subject and evidence of teaching experience although this is not set in stone. EDEXCELL also have in the past used students to mark specific questions(for example on the English Lit paper:eek:)
WJEC Subject experience required(that's all I can find about them as my friend who has marked for them for years is not available at the mo).
OCR will take examiners without teaching qualifications in certain circumstances the candidate would need a degree in the subject and relevant experience.
When you are taken on as a marker you will be required to attend a training day(you are paid for this) and each year everyone has to attend a standardizing meeting where you are all given a set of the same papers. You mark some at the meeting (and are given the "correct mark") in then in most cases the rest at home. You have to mark within the parameters before you are given permission to mark real live papers. The deadlines are very tight and you are supervised. The money is OK but it is not easy money by any stretch of the imagination.
I doubt there are any vacancies in the "main subjects" for this year as the contracts went out ages ago and the subject e collect is now live.
Anyway, I hope this is of some use.

Something else(sorry:o)
All the boards have casual workers(99% are students) checking the exam papers after they are marked this is not marking it is making sure that every page is ticked(even the blank pages need a mark to show they have been looked at) the marks tally up etc.
Sometimes this causes confusion but this is not exam marking(although as a OP said there have been times that students are used to mark papers).

Hi
I have marked the key stage 2 science SATs papers for 2 years now. The requirements were teaching experiance in a primary school and final year students who had experiance working in a primary school. I applied for GCSE Exam marker this year as the key stage 2 papers have been scrapped. I was declined as I do not teach at that level. Therefore I can only mark key stage 2 maths and english tests which are not being completed by alot of schools. Oh well it was good while it lasted.0
