how easy is it to fill this form out?
i have got the notes, etc but looks a little confusing.
I begrudge giving my solicitor £100 for her to fill it out for what amoounts to about 5 mins "work", or is it £100 well spent?
just a leasehold flat purchased for £167,000.
any help much appreciated!

I think £100 is a bit steep to be honest.
Usually around £50-60.
It would probably take the sol 10 mins or so, but it is a bit mind boggling to do if you've never done one before.
if you take on the responsibility yourself you'll need to submit it to the inland rev within 30 days of completion or you'll get a £100 fine anyway.0 -
yeah i complete on Friday, but just really begrudge given them even more money for yet again not very much work (but i suppose the 5 years or whatever studying kinda makes up for it! lol)0

conveyancingwarehouse.com charge £39 + VAT for doing this form. I can't begrudge them that because their service is so cheap (and has been so reliable) I don't expect any extras thrown in for the price. £100 seems way too much, I think if you are paying a decent rate for the solicitor it should be included as part of a full service seeing as it takes them so little time to fill it out.
Look at it this way, if it takes you 4 hours and you pay yourself £117.50 (£100 plus vat), you are earning £29.38 tax free per hour.
If you pay the solicitor £117.50 they are getting that for 10 minutes work and you will have already paid tax on the money you earnt to pay the solicitor.
As I only have to pay £39+ vat I am getting my solcitor to do it for me, but if I had to pay £100 I would do it myself.0 -
yep I have got a full service from them, but on the itemised billing are charging me £100 for it.
will give it a go myself.
then if I struggle, I'll just send it off with time to spare.

was this £100 detailed on the original quotation they gave you for teh work ? if so, you ought to have challenged it at the beginning before agreeing their costs, but, nothign to lose by doing it yourself now - but they DO fine you if you are late !!0

A £100 for the SDLT form... what a rip off!!!
I too am with Conveyancing Warehouse and very good they are too, but I decided to save myself the £39 + vat and completed the SDLT form myself.
It is alot easier to complete if you are buying and selling a freehold property...and some of the leasehold questions seem quite obscure but £100 is too much.
Also the Inland Revenue will help you, plus the guidance leaflet, though many pages is very comprehensive. I'd suggest you download the leaflet and take an hour to read it then decide....perhaps call the IR too as they answered all my initial questions.

We're in the processs of buying a house at the moment too. Our solictors wanted to charge £50 for filling it in. We decided we could manage it ourselves, yet when we received all of our forms and contracts through to sign, they had completed it anyway! When I saw the form, it looked an absolute nightmare though.0

Where and how do you obtain this form - do they send it through to you when you complete, or do you just download it?
Would like to see an example to see if it is worth trying to tave the money.

You can download the guidelines (SDLT6) for filling in the return (SDLT1) but you don't seem to be able to download the SDLT1 form itself. You can also submit your return online at that site.
