Macs are a waste of money. You can buy a legitimate copy of Macintosh "Snow Leopard" OSX for $25 and it will run on a Intel x86 PC. That is the architecture which would normally be used to run Microsoft Windows. You can even run OSX as a virtual system within VirtualBox, or VMWare. In fact, you can run OSX on hardware than is currently superior to anything offered by Apple.

Gone are the days of Macs running only on Motorola 68Ks microprocessors. Once upon a time (circa late 1980s-early 1990s) the Motorola was a superior architecture, offering more advanced addressing capabilities than supported on the x86, the processor series used in IBM PC compatibles. But those days are long gone.

Apple abandoned the 68K in favour of the Intel x86 series and Motorola is no longer a chipmaker. Motorola's IPRs, including those for the M68K series, were bought by Freescale, who have all but abandoned development of the M68k processor series.

Today, the Mac is much the same as a PC inside, and OSX is not as stable (nor as free) as Linux. So what are you paying all that extra money for when buying a Mac? Other than the snob factor, damned if I know!

Just taking a peek at apple.com/uk.... absolutely everything about the Mac is overpriced.. from the cost of the processors, the memory options, the hard drives.. the price of every single component is inflated by several times above the market price..

The basic Mac Pro costs £2041 (including Free Delivery.. I should think so too!)

    http://store.apple.com/uk-business/browse/home/shop_mac/family/mac_pro

For that price, the hardware specification is not to be sniffed at, but Apple's prices, for what you get, are appalling.

For example, adding a second 2TB hard drive to the MacPro costs..

    2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive [+ £245.00]

That specification of drive from an unnamed maker, should cost less than £100.. A 2TB 7200rpm 3Gb/s SATA from Western Digital, for example, costs £80.

That markup of 200% on an off-the-shelf component is par for the course with Apple..

Buying Mac is money down the pan.

Wow, thanks! That was a powerful point! Some rainy day, i will install OSX under virtualbox on this PC, just for the fun.

What a waste of money Macs truly are. All fur coat and no knickers, as the saying goes!

I guess people just fall for marketing. It makes them feel good to know that they've bought into a sexy famous brand.

I can kind of understand that when you are talking about a car that is very publicly on display.

But when it's just a steel box that sits under the desk, who's going to see the label on it, or even care who [STRIKE]made[/STRIKE] labelled it?
