Tiling!

I asked my neighbour if he wanted to tile my bathroom, no chipping off but tile over existing tiles.

I bought cheap and cheerful white tiles and black grout, and asked him to suggest a price - he has obviously seen my bathroom.

He text £60, so I said great - I have never paid for any work to be done, so just accepted the price.

Bless him, he was here 6 hours yesterday, and six hours so far today, I feel terrible he still needs to do half the grouting. He has done a great job but did say the black grout was a pain in the !!!!!

I feel I should give him some more cash, I now think his price was far too low, I only rent this place, and paid £80 on tiling stuff, I have already drawn out £80, £20 more than agreed but will struggle a bit to find anymore spare cash as the moment but I feel terrible - I just never knew how big a job it would be!

What would you do?

difficult one - but then if he had seen the bathroom its not like you were in any way to blame. I would give him the £80 and keep hom supplied with tea/coffee and biscuits :)

Ps I dont see how the colour of the grout would affect the time taken to do the job.

It does, because any white adhesive that is between the tiles will show through the coloured grout.

should have known that - we had a similar "issue" with grey adhesive and ivory grout.

Black grout is charged at twice the fitting price of white

It ruins floats and sponges and is a real pain to clean off even with a washboy

Hope the tiling is perfect as the black will show up EVERY imperfection!

Give him the £80 and tell him you really appreciate the work he's done, but you honestly can't afford to give him more. He was the one that said £60 after all, and I'm sure he'll appreciate that you tried to give more.

Do you have any skills you can trade with him in return - doing anything in his garden, babysitting, baking him some cakes, computer support, any of that kind of thing?
  • Nice one Dander, good idea to trade skills.

Shame that more neighbours don't do that sort of thing, kinda cuts out the tax man as well. Although it is probably buried in the law somewhere.........

I'd happily trade some work for a good babysitter!!

I agree with latecomer. Give him the £80 and if you can offer some(non sexual) service in exchange as well, then that's a bonus for both of you. I have exchanged labour with my neighbour. I did some wiring for him and he put up coving in my bedroom. Both of us were pleased with the exchange.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
