Best thing to do is go by word of mouth recommendation. Tell your son/daughter to ask around his friends at school etc. Although having said that I just went for the cheapest I could find in true MSE style, and he turned out to be fantastic, but I'm nowhere near you! :D

The odds on that happening again are the same as those for winning the lottery. MSE is fine for cheap goods / services of a uniform standard, but for one to one tuition where you learn a skill for life, you really get what you pay for.

That doesn't mean go with the big brands like AA / BSM / Red / Bill Plant as they inflate their prices to cover their massive franchise fee overheads without any guarantee you'll get a decent instructor. After all, the instructors with the worst teaching / interpersonal skills tend to stick with big franchises as it's the only way they can find work. An independent instructor has to rely on his reputation for recommendation, so find a "reassuringly expensive" independent instructor.

Yeah I know! He was actually with a franchise, but left part way through my learning as it was rubbish - took a fortune off him in return for nothing basically.
