If you have British Gas gas AND electricity

On Martin's main article he advises people thinking of switching providers to hold fire, unless they currently have British Gas supplying their gas and their local electricity supplier supplying their electricity, in which case they are probably paying so far over the odds anyway that they might as well switch now.

Do you think this also applies to people who get their gas from British Gas and ALSO their electricity?

When I did a price comparison a few days ago, Atlantic Energy came up with around a 25% saving so I'm unsure whether I should still hold out or not.

Basically I'm not sure if I come under the "hold fire" or the "switch now" category!!!

Any help appreciated.

Well BG put their prices up by 12%/9.4% for gas/electricity, so it seems reasonable to deduct that sort of percentage from any savings you are now seeing as a crude means of 'evening out the playing field'. In other words, even assuming Atlantic will at some point put up their prices by the same amount as BG, you are still looking at more than 10% savings from switching (plus £12.50 cashback ;)).
  • Got the same dilema - getting gas and electricity from British Gas at £100 a month by direct debit and don't know whether to switch or not.

Again any advice would be appreciated.

I currently pay £50pm on Elec £45.00pm on Gas, yet they are still saying on my lowest bill i still have not paid enough. According to them my may, june, july bill was nearly £200 for elec alone. Personally cant see how, but its a tricky one a t the mo, as they changed my meter and cocked it all up anyway. Sent me in 2 bills for £3223.76! Took ages to get another bill issued.

Now thinking of going on a prepayment meter as i think it will be the only way to sort out my bills.
Then that way i am only paying for the elec and gas i deff use :rotfl:
I know they have a different tarrif but it worked for me that way in our previous houses, Paying by dd has done nothing but get me in arrears

So pre payment for me i think!

I'm in the same situation.. live in a 2 bedroom and gas and electricity are with BG. Dont know what to do.. we try our best to keep bills down and this is the only bill that confuses me, any help would be great!

    Thanks
  • Make sure you do not have your energy prices frozen until some date in the future. I'm with BG for both (as recommenmded by Uswitch almost a year ago) and my prices are frozen.

Comparison sites use current charges in their calculations. It's a bit like being on a low fixed rate mortgage and then comparing standard variable rates to find the cheapest mortgage provider.
