Pbs with Adobe Flash Player 10 - Advice pls

Bear with me... it's prob sthg easy to do but I can't work it out
I have a few months old Toshiba with windows 7 on 64bit. I need an update on Flash player for surveys and various things but i downloaded it several times now and it doesn't upgrade...It says download successful but i still can't find it...HELP please it's driving me nuts...I don't really want/know how to go down 32-bit etc...
I saw a mention of Chrome... I've only ever used IE... can they both be used etc...?
Any advice much appreciated. thanks as always
