We should all get one slot of land. You then build a house on it, but the foundations have to be able to cope with 6 storeys. You then build on the ground floor, if you don't need more space, that's it. If you do, add another floor. As your family ages, they can have their own floor added....... It might help concentrate people's minds on the world being overpopulated if it impacted on their own bit of it. At the moment if you have 3-4-5-6-7+ kids you think they'll leave home soon, so not your problem. This'd make you think twice.

Me? I'd put a nice little wooden shed on my bit.

I think that the baby boom has come about because of the very generous benefits system. If this is the case and if said benefits are now going to be slashed because they were unaffordable in the first instance and even more so now that we have a £160 billion a year debt to pay back, then less people will be attracted to coming to the UK since their reason for coming will no longer exist? I doubt that all these people who have come to the UK over the last 13 years have come here for the wonderful weather, golden beaches and cheap houses. Therefore, my belief is that once the benefits tap turns off, so will the population tap (eventually).

I see we still don't have a response from the numerous bears who kept asserting the long term demographics mean house prices will be falling.

Probably frantically deleting posts, or something.....

Well - I'm glad so august an institution as the Times has noticed that people are having more children than they used to a generation ago (and its not just immigrants - native-born people are doing so too).

I cant help but think that its purely and simply down to people being given so much money towards it by the Government - Child Tax Credit/that Trust Fund thing that was recently introduced/etc.

You only have to read the Relationships Forum (as I call it) on MSE and time after time people come on wondering how on earth to afford children - and other posters promptly pile in with responses along the line of "Dont worry about it - other people will pay" (ie "you can get this benefit/that benefit/the other benefit from the State") - ie "you can have children at other peoples expense". Net result - the original poster usually goes off and starts procreating on the spot (having been duly reassured that they personally wont have to cough up much of the cost of doing so).

We certainly DO have a huge problem lining up to hit us right between the eyebrows when all these children from 3-4 child families hit adulthood in 15-20 years time and all require housing/jobs/etc:eek:. If people thought that us Baby Boomers created a bit of a problem (when many of us were born into 2 child families) - they ain't seen nuthin' yet to what is to come when all these children of large families come of age..

<ducks quickly - awaiting missiles being thrown at me by all the "It's my RIGHT to have however-many-children I want and expect you to pay" brigade.>
