I am new to this forum and hope that someone can answer my question.
I have been working for last 2 yrs (after a few yrs break) and I'm now too unwell to continue. Would I be able to claim ESA? how much contributions do you have to have paid to qualify.
Thanks

you would get ssp for 28 weeks, after that you would be invited to claim esa by the dwp if you are still sick.
you have to go through hoops to prove your entitlement to esa0 -
Hello,
To claim ESA Contribution based you need to have made paid enough NI for the tax years 2007-2008 to 2008-2009 as the DWP year runs differently to the tax year.

Thanks for your replies, its look like I might not be entitled to ESA, dont think I have paid in enough contriabutions. My dr. has given me a 'fitness line' for 12 weeks. I can send this in then afc80?
I know next to nothing about benefits. Thanks again0 -

Yes, give it to your employer, if your are still in employment. You should also phone your council and ask that they issue you with a Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit application form.
If you pay rent you will be entitled to help with both, based on your reduced income (ssp). If you own your property you can claim CTB0
