You don't sound stupid at all :)
a lot of people don't know what a gimlet is, or the difference between a gimlet and a bradawl.

It's a woodworking tool, designed for making small holes.

you can pick them up for a couple of quid from any decent place that sells tools, or online.

the link below gives you an idea of what I'm on about:

If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I use a pointy serrated small kitchen knife amd just keep pressing down twisting and turning, only takes a few seconds to make a hole.

Drill down into a bit of scrap wood on the other side of the plastic as this will help stop it splitting,
If you put some tape over the other side too it will help.

    Yep,basic engineering 101...
Scratch a cross into the plastic with a nail or something, then place the drill bit point into the center & drill away.the cross should stop the drill from slipping.

Ive been using a soldering iron after a tip from on here.

I appreciate not everyone happens to have one to hand! LUcky OH keeps stuff like this im sure i tried to get him to chuck it away at some point lol

Brilliant for the morrisons flower buckets that I cracked a couple of it, and also the poundland type troughs.

Been drilling through the flexi- trugs though. Easy and wouldnt crack anyway.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
