Hi. If you are quick you can still plant potatoes. It really depends on where you are as as frost could still pop up if you are up north. Regarding other things you can sow outdoors. Peas, broad beans, lettuce, beetroot, spring onions, radish, sweet peas,Cabbage, Kohl rabi, Turnips, spinach ( i think). You can make some paper pots and put some runner beans in to bring on indoors on a window sill, then plant out in the middle of May if the frosts have finished. The same thing with cucumbers, courgettes. Or you could either buy some plants from a cheap nursery or scrounge some from friends or ask on freecycle for some plants that are excess to requirement.People always sow to many Tomato plants so ask for those as well. Swede can also be planted now in the ground. I am thinking randomly now. If you pop along to The Co-op you can ask for some of the pots that they sell their flowers in, they are really good for planting tomato plants in to have on your patio. Our co-op give them away free.Drill some holes in the bottom and plant your Toms in it. Too be honest now is the time to sow/plant most things so you have asked at the right time. Good luck with your allotment. I am just about to go back onto mine. OOh just thought as its May Day bank holiday, there should be some boot sales or some sort of May Day event on that would be selling veg plants very cheap, so have a look out for one of those. Good luck. Hope my ramblings have been a help.
Sorry i have just seen that you come from the south, so next week should see the end of the frosts also thought that Sunflowers and nastursiums can be sown. French Marigolds as well.20p savers club

Congratulations on getting your allotment.
Look/talk to the other allotment holders and you will find out the best sowing/plantings times for where you are, what (if any) the local growing problems are and what grows well.
I would also get a few books out of the library for evening reading.
Good luck0 -
I have just planted some winter crops - parsnips, broccoli, and sprouts but you would be able to try a wide range of things including carrots, beetroot, squash, beans, and leeks.
As demented said, nastursiums are good for bees and they like our snapdragons and calendulas which self seed.0 -

If you are quick virtually and veggies will be fine sown now. Even toms, but the trouble is some longer maturing veggies may run out of growing season. Ie you end up having to ripen toms inside the house lol.
I have to say last year we had such a mild autumn, stuff was growing for ages.
I always think the worst thing is you have lost a few seeds and a bit of time, which isn't a problem really.
There are plenty of quick growers that you can sow now with no worries at all. Salad leaves, radishes, spring onions, peas, beans and soft herbs spring to mind.
Enjoy yourself and treat the first year as a learning curve.
