CapQuest taken on Natwest debt

Hi All,
I'm having a panic! Got home last night to find a letter through the post from CapQuest saying they have taken on a Natwest debt of £1130.01. It took me a min to figure out what it was as I have a Natwest CC but it is less than this amount, and I realised that it's a Student Overdraft I had at Uni and stupidly forgot all about as I had heard nothing about it and I don't even have a card for them anymore. So this must be from about 3 years ago.
There is no way I can afford £1130.01 - for a start it's more than a month's wages! Does anyone know if CapQuest are reasonable to deal with? I've never had to deal with a company like this before. Would also explain why I've not been able to get a CC for so long, this must be one heck of a black mark on my credit rating!!

Debt collectors are never reasonable to deal with, they flout the guidelines and even laws so get in trouble with the FSA/FOS and OFT on a regular basis. CapQuest are more frequently called CrapQuest too
(on the forum), but they do also operate under alternative names like Red Collections
As it was 3 years ago and no where near the 6 year statute barred date i would first go with sending the prove it letter, - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=11570893&postcount=2
Next step is if they prove you owe the money is start paying it back, you benefited from it to get where you are now so need to work on repayment. Either carry on an affordable repayment or look up making a full and final offer. http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=24_full_and_final_settlement_offers
Since a DCA is collecting this have you ever checked your credit file you are likely to have a default placed against this debt on your records - http://www.ico.gov.uk/for_the_public/topic_specific_guides/credit.aspx
It is possible the DCA could take out a CCJ to secure payment, which is something to be weavy of.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

Hi DarkConvict,
Thank you so much for all the info. I have sent off the prove it letter today so hopefully that should buy me some time while I sit down and work out how I am going to go about making offers and where to get the extra money from.
Am so angry with myself  Feels like all this cr*p is never ending

Ok, so today I have come home to 2 letters regarding this debt.
One (dated 10th May) is from CapQuest saying that they have received my letter and they will now investigate and get back to me.
The second is from HL Legal Solicitors (dated 11th May) saying that CapQuest have appointed them and unless I pay in full or a 'satisfactory proposal for settlement' is received by 22nd May then court proceedings may be issued against me.
The letter also says that if court proceedings are necessary they will add on Court Costs of £65 and Solicitors costs of £80 in addition to interest being accrued on a daily basis.
Basically, I'm wondering if I need to do anything about the second letter, considering CapQuest have said they are looking into it and will get back to me, and all payments have to go directly to them anyway?

HL Legal & CapQuest are the same people, so you don't need to do anything. The 2nd was probably just produced automatically.
If you get another, then you may need to give them "hell". :cool:Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

This is the first time I've been contacted by anyone about this and in this manner. My first thoughts (after a mild panic attack) was to ignore this letter as it did smell of a scam. Please can someone advice whether I shold ignore this or do something.
Thanks
I'm going to move this post and replies to a new thread, as that will help us reply to you and not get the 2 situations confused.
